Three high-speed 1TB NVMe SSDs are going cheap in the UK

Today we have a special edition of Will write a deals post for RPS as three of my favorite 1TB NVMe SSDs (yes, I’m such a nerd) are for sale here in the UK.

We have two Samsung drives here, the PCIe 3.0 Samsung 980 and the PCIe 4.0 Samsung 980 Pro, as well as another strong PCIe 4.0 option, the Crucial P5 Plus. All three offer excellent value for their reduced price, so let’s cover each in turn!

Let’s start with the cheapest option. The Samsung 980 is a surprisingly fast DRAM-less SSD that uses TLC memory. The 1TB size comes with a large 160GB SLC cache that helps maintain performance even during sustained read/writes, and performance is generally comparable to older (but more expensive) PCIe 3.0 options such as comparable to the Samsung 970 Evo. It’s been reduced from its regular £85 price to just £70 at Curries when you use code FNDDGAMING at the checkout – an excellent value given the peak read speeds of 3500 MB/s, peak write speeds of 2900 MB/s, 500,000 IOPS read and 480,000 IOPS write. The drive also comes with a five-year warranty, which is among the best in the business. All in all it’s amazing that you can get such a good ride for under £70 these days!

Next up is the Samsung 980 Pro, a massively faster drive that uses Samsung’s latest PCIe 4.0 controller, fast TLC flash memory, and a DRAM cache. This cutting-edge technology allows the 980 Pro to achieve sequential top speeds of 7000MB/s (read) and 5000MB/s (write), making it one of the fastest drives on the market. Random I/O performance is also strong at 690,000 IOPS reads and 660,000 IOPS writes. Perhaps unsurprisingly, this makes the drive an excellent choice for PC gaming or content creation, and the drive also meets Sony’s requirements for the PS5. This model even comes with a heatsink so getting a 1TB size for £100 is pretty legit.

Finally the Crucial P5 Plus. This uses Micron’s TLC flash memory and PCIe 4.0 controller, which are made slightly after Samsung’s equivalent parts, and produces broadly similar performance. Maximum sequential speeds are reported as 6600MB/s and 5000MB/s for reads and writes, respectively, which is slightly below the Samsung 980 Pro but significantly faster than previous PCIe 4.0 drives. The random speeds are also fast at 630,000/700,000 IOPS for reads and writes respectively. If you prefer Crucial drives over Samsung’s this is a solid choice, but I’d say the included heatsink with the 980 Pro highlighted above makes it a better choice most Persons.
