That is shocking!!!
A 19-year-old from the UK nearly died after a frightening encounter with a bison while hiking in South Dakota!
On June 16th Amelia “Mia” Deana friend and her friend’s dog were on day two of a month-long road trip across the country when they decided to hike a trail in town Custer State Park. Unfortunately, things took a devastating turn when they reached the end of the trail.

Mia’s father, Matthew Deansaid Dakota News Now:
“They came over a hill and saw down in the dip, quite far ahead of them, they saw a large male bison.”
While the couple considered turning around to avoid the big beast, the giant beast didn’t seem bothered by their presence either. Also, they had been hiking for almost two hours and were getting tired. Mia told the outlet:
“I was really dehydrated, it was really sunny and we’d both given the dog our water about an hour ago.”
Ultimately, they decided their best option was to move on around the bison. But that decision would prove disastrous. Her mother, Jacqueline Deantold the newspaper the hikers walked around the bison and got back on the trail when trouble arose, explaining:
“Suddenly the bison looked up. They were over 100 meters away and the bison just ran down the hill towards them. It came right up and stopped in front of her, and then they apparently made eye contact for a few seconds.”
Recalling how close she was to the wild creature, Mia described:
“I could have put my hand on his forehead without really putting it out, that’s fine.”
What could have been an amazing moment in the face of the awesome power of nature quickly turned into a brutal struggle for survival.
After a quick look down, the bison drove a horn all the way up the teen’s left thigh and threw her “in the air,” Jacqueline said, with Matthew adding:
“We were told it’s about 10 to 15 feet.”
Recalling only flashes of the near-death experience, Mia said:
“I remember feeling the pressure on my hip. My hip was pushed back and I remember the feeling of flying in the air and going head over heels.”
“The bison stayed around and his hooves were right over my head. I remember they were right next to my head.”
Luckily, Jacqueline was able to lure the creature away and then call for help. phew! Thank god for your quick thinking! Unfortunately, it was too late for her friend to escape unscathed.
Mia has been in the hospital for seven weeks now. On one GoFundMe Page, Mia’s family noted that she is “completely separated [her] femoral artery” and suffered serious injuries to her leg – but they also expressed their gratitude that it wasn’t worse:
“We are fortunate that our daughter is still breathing as she should have bled to death within 2-8 minutes of the artery being cut and the ambulance took 20 minutes to arrive. It is a miracle that she is alive today.”
Mia agrees, saying, “It’s a miracle” that she survived until the ambulance arrived, “let alone” when she made it health of the monument in Rapid City, per Dakota News Now.

She has a long health battle ahead as the bison also damaged her shin and peroneal nerves, leaving her paralyzed from the knee down in one of her legs. Her family hopes to raise enough money for her to undergo tests and surgeries Mayo Clinic, noting that her travel insurance does not cover all expenses. At the fundraiser, they said:
“Mia is English and although her travel insurance has paid for the femoral artery bypass graft so far, she refuses to pay for even the initial specialist examination of her nerve injury. Mayo Clinic, a world-class peripheral nerve hospital (a niche area), accepted Mia as a referral from Rapid City Hospital. Mia’s injury is primarily complicated, including both vascular and nerve injury, but the nerve damage itself is also complex and extensive. This could be Mia’s best chance to regain control of her foot and time is running out.”
Mia intended to take part University of Edinburgh this fall after taking a gap year to travel the world. She’s been a passionate dancer since she was a child, which makes this leg injury particularly devastating. Her family will never know why this happened to her, but they believe that “God has a plan and a purpose for her because it wasn’t her time to die,” writing:
“We have no idea why this happened to our little girl and we just wish she could walk and dance again and live life to the fullest without chronic long-term pain.”
Sending so much love to Mia while she recovers!! You can hear more of her story (below).
