Michail Antonio has spoken out on the Footballer’s Football Podcast about Jesse Lingard after turning down a move to West Ham to join Nottingham Forest.
The England international was expected to join the Hammers for almost 18 months after an incredible loan spell in 2021, but Lingard has ended up at Forest despite an offer from the London club for the stadium this summer.
The midfielder has snubbed West Ham and left the club’s fan base quite disappointed and he has also swayed Michail Antonio as the Jamaica international was hoping to reunite with Lingard this season.
what was said
Antonio spoke about Lingard and his decision not to join West Ham.
“I was definitely disappointed, I won’t lie, he was quality for us, he was a great player, he helped push us forward, he was one of the reasons we made it in Europe and we looked to him and pleased him a player that we need now. It’s a great signing for Forest and I put it down to him wanting to go somewhere where he can just play week in week out because there’s a lot of competition at West Ham,” said Antonio.
Hard to take
Lingard snubbing the Hammers must be hard for many West Ham players to take.
Think about it, the midfielder seemed desperate to return to the London club over the past 12 months, he’s seemingly been very close to some of his ex-team-mates and as Antonio says he’s a player they need now.
For one reason or another, however, he’s switched to Forest instead and West Ham still lack that creative goalscoring power in midfield.
It remains to be seen who West Ham will turn to as a Lingard alternative but they hope they can manage to do a better job than they did last summer when they signed Nikola Vlasic.
